Chicago Navy Pier
Chicago Navy Pier

Chicago’s Navy Pier is a 3,300-foot-long pier on the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and one of the most visited attractions in the entire Midwestern United States. As the Pier approached its centennial in 2016, the city launched an international competition to renovate and reactivate the landmark, asking participants to redefine what the pier and the waterfront mean to the city.

As part of the comprehensive competition by AECOM and Bjarke Ingels Group, Project Projects developed the branding, identity, and wayfinding and signage system, as well as concepts for a suite of mobile applications that would facilitate visitors’ social interactions onsite. The shortlisted entry—Pier+—focused on changes that would physically and visually anchor the site back to the city, either by exchanging or adding to the parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions, and exhibition facilities that were already located on the Pier.
