The annual Abraaj Group Art Prize showcases talent by artists based in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Commissioned by guest curator Murtaza Vali, Project Projects developed a set of softcover catalogues featuring each of the five winning artists of the 2013 Prize.
While the books appear from a distance to be a consistent instances of a system, closer inspection reveals subtle differences in typography and physical materials. Through these subtle shifts the design of the extra | ordinary book set expands upon the exhibition concept and its focus on the oft-overlooked details of the everyday. The format of a set of paperback books was chosen as an informal, welcoming means of presenting each artist’s modes of research and production—the compiled set then creates a framework for dialogue between these individual practices.
