Grey Room is a journal of architecture, art, media, and politics from MIT Press, now in its fifteenth year. Project Projects developed and designed the journal’s inaugural website, facilitating the sharing of years of innovative scholarship.
As a journal, Grey Room values reading that is deliberate, slowed down, and contemplative. Transposing the journal’s print identity to a digital format, the website is designed to embody the journal’s savvy, critical perspective on media, facilitating an in-depth engagement with its contents, both visual and textual. One central device of the website redesign is in its use of figures: each time the page is loaded, it randomly arrays images as background thumbnails, which may then be examined as high resolution full-bleed panels. The site also features an elaborate tagging system, which connects articles across issues and disciplines.
