With thirteen reconstructed piers, the nearly 550-acre Hudson River Park has become an integral part of many New Yorkers’ daily lives. In 2010, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates undertook the redesign of the Park’s Pier 62, located between West 23rd and 22nd Streets in Chelsea. Pier 62 includes gardens, a California-style skatepark, and an animal carousel.
The Pier’s new identity system by Project Projects is centered around a custom, geometric, monoline typeface that relates directly to its manner of fabrication—via routing out of a concrete surface. The rounded typeface also resonates with the curved walls of the skatepark bowl and other architectural features.
