James Cohan

Project Projects’s identity for James Cohan gallery developed out of thorough research of contemporary art gallery communications. The logotype uses a crisp yet elegant custom typeface based on Commercial Type’s Portrait typeface; certain angles of the original typeface were shaved down to create a feeling of openness and playfulness in an otherwise serious serif. The secondary typeface is a sans-serif revival of European Grotesk, selected to balance out the classicism of the primary type with a contemporary flourish.

The new identity was debuted at James Cohan’s new Lower East Side gallery during its inaugural exhibition of early drawings and sculptures of Robert Smithson, for which Project Projects also designed the exhibition print materials.
