The Future Is Not What It Used to Be:
The 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial exhibition

Curated by Zoë Ryan, the 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial gathered 53 projects from designers worldwide to address the question: “What is the future now?” Project Projects worked closely the curators from the outset of the project, aiding the development the Biennial’s conceptual framework as well as its design system, in close collaboration with Istanbul-based architecture firm Superpool.

The exhibition’s primary spatial intervention was a scrolling fabric banner which divided the building’s floor plan in two. The banner displayed quotes related to various manifestos and projects tied to the exhibition, typeset in Caslon Doric, Project Projects’ custom typeface for the Biennial. The banner created a linear yet winding path, directing movement through the space while simultaneously annotating its contents. As a result, it presented text as a material factor which impacts perception and motion.
